Boulder, Colorado has a population of about 85,000 people. The city encompasses about 25 square miles at the foot of mountains called the Flatirons. Boulder is known for its open space, called a greenbelt, and its numerous high technology businesses. Many unique companies are found in Boulder, including Leanin' Tree, which produces western art, and Celestial Seasonings, a tea company. Boulder has a pedestrian mall called the Pearl Street Mall. The University of Colorado, a college with 25,000 students, is also located in Boulder. A beautiful teahouse was constructed two yeas ago, which was given to Boulder by its sister city, Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Rock climbing, skiing, hiking, and mountain biking are a few of the sports that are popular in and around Boulder. Like the rest of the United States, Boulder has a democratic form of government. English is the primary language, although a small minority speak Spanish or other languages. In general, the people of Boulder have an appreciation for the environment and for nature.

Japan consists of four main islands and hundreds of smaller islands that stretch along the eastern edge of the Asian mainland. About 75% of the land in Japan is mountainous. The islands of Japan are actually the peaks of mountain ranges. Mount Fuji is Japan's highest mountain. It is 3,776 meters (12,388 feet) high and is an inactive volcano. About fifty active volcanoes are found in Japan. It has a much older history than Boulder, Colorado. Many temples and shrines are found in Japan. The traditional dress of Japan is called the kimono. Tea and tea ceremonies are a large part of the Japanese culture. Because of the proximity of the ocean, seafood is an important part of the Japanese diet. The Japanese use a variety of different plates and bowls during their meals, and chopsticks are used for utensils. Japan's government is a constitutional monarchy, with an emperor. Japanese is the primary spoken language, although a very small minority of the population speaks Korean. Seventy-five percent of the population follows the Buddhist form of religion. Similar to Boulder, the Japanese have a strong appreciation for nature.
